difference between us and england on emerging church

i have been impressed with the 'living room' established by karen and co (COTA)in seattle. (see it at www.livingroomseattle.org )

it makes me think and ask the question:is this the new church

ie provide an all round space which the new church is but one part of, or even sponsers the space. it seems that it creates an interest among people; creates a neutral space inwhich people feel comfortable with out feeling that the 'church' is trying to grab them or convert them or even sell them 'religion'

too many of the cafes and coffeeshops set up by the evangelicals seem to do just that - entice or bait and swap.

however, in england i dont see this development happening - it still seems to be mother church providing space for emerging church to form under its wings (once mother hated her young now she seems to be wanting them back in the nest!!) there doesnt appear to be any other space established apart from the 'come and experience' the numinous!

what do others think?

here in Aus we dont have that many to make the distinction but i think we are more the UK rather than US model!?

cheers
Comments:
yep, we've always been more like the uk model than the us...

however there seems to be a difference in the amount of theological thought n process we aussies have put into thinking about new ways of doing church..

i'm generalising but it seems that both the us and uk went ahead n did it, when lots of sussies seemed to think about it lots first. im of the mind that the stuff that'll be happening here in the future will be rather exciting...

I have to agree with you re: "cafes and coffeeshops entice or bait and swap". It fits with a baby boomer approach to marketing church. It lacks authenticity if it seeks to 'grab' rather than 'explain'.

I don't go in for the word 'model' as I think a fundamental of the emerging church is that there is no model, rather a new way of 'being' church (not a new way of doing church. Doesn't using the word model imply, "Hey this is the way to do it, just follow me"?

Just a quick note, I grew up an Anglican too and have family in the clergy but have enjoyed being part of many different denominations over the years. I am interested to know from your experience what the Anglican church know of the emerging church.

I think Australians are developing their own distinctive approach.

But I would agree it approximates the UK model closer than the US.

I see this as due to a number of factors, not least of which is that Australia and the UK are far more advanced into the post-modern shift than the US.
